What To Expect The Week of Your Spray Foam Installation

You’ve made the decision to have spray foam insulation installed at your property. Your on-site assessment is complete, your quote is signed, and your install job is scheduled. So now what?

First off, congratulations on making this wise investment into your home! You will be so glad you went with the most superior, energy-efficient, and cost-effective insulation available today. We appreciate your business and will do all we can to provide a quality service experience.

Now let’s talk about what you can expect the week of your install.

Installation Day

The Epic Spray Foam crew typically arrives on-site between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. to begin setting up and taking care of initial prep work. Our crew is usually ready to begin insulating and encapsulating the home around 9:00 a.m. Our team is highly-trained and experienced, and will take the time to implement important installation measures, such as providing a tent over access doors and air sealing all your attic’s entry points. Full masks and personal protective equipment are worn by our insulation professionals for the duration of service.

The entire process is typically completed on the same day. Additionally, Epic Spray Foam handles the handling and disposal of any pre-existing insulation that needs to be removed before the new insulation is applied.

Can I Stay On-Site During My Installation?

Once our crew has prepped and is ready to begin the insulation and encapsulation process (usually around 9 a.m.), we ask that all humans and pets evacuate the building for 24 hours. Epic Spray Foam ventilates each home and air exchanges during the insulation and encapsulation processes. The re-entry time on spray foam has improved over the years and manufacturers allow re-entry after 4 hours, but it’s still the highly recommended and best case scenario for homeowners to plan on staying away overnight.

What’s that Smell?

Spray foam is made from the same polyurethane that comes in couches and seats in vehicles, and it is not odorless. You can expect to experience that “new car smell” at first, but it will dissipate within 4-5 days.

The odor is not harmful to your health. In fact, all our open-cell spray foam products are GREENGUARD Gold Certified, which means they are designed to contribute to safer, healthier indoor air. These products are tested and verified to have low chemical emissions, especially Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). You can feel confident knowing all our spray foam is screened for more than 15,000 VOCs known to contaminate indoor air.

When our crew is there, we will open up the windows if possible and turn on fans to help with air circulation. We will close windows and turn off fans when we leave the premises.

What Can I Expect When I Return Home?

Once you return to your property, the spray foam will be fully expanded and reacted. You can turn on fans (especially the ones that exhaust outside such as bathroom fans) and open windows to help speed up the acclimation process. Because open-cell spray foam is water blown, it can take a few days for that additional humidity to be climatized out by your home’s air conditioning system and for the relative humidity to stabilize.

Keep an eye on relative humidity in your attic after encapsulation. Relative humidity in your home should average 55% or less.  (Of course, on rainy days it will be significantly higher, but on average we want to see the relative humidity around 55% or lower.)

Note: If you or a contractor ever need to cut a hole in spray foam for any reason in the future, they should refill and reseal the cavity with foam to restore the encapsulation and seal off any air leaks.

Enjoy All the Benefits of Spray Foam

Now that your home is insulated with the highest-quality spray foam, you will notice an immediate change in comfort level. Get ready to enjoy a more quiet, clean, and safe environment! Homeowners who upgrade to spray foam save an average of 20% on their year-round energy bills. And don’t forget to take advantage of the new spray foam tax credit that went into effect in January of 2023. U.S. residential homeowners can claim 30% of product costs, with a maximum credit amount of $1,200.
