Most Georgia homeowners have experienced one or two hot days where the humidity level is high, the sun is shining bright, and the temperature is HOT. On days like those it’s not uncommon for your HVAC unit to be put to the test to keep your home cool (or at least not sweltering). If you notice your HVAC unit is running non-stop but your house still seems warm, then your first call may need to be to an insulation professional and not your local HVAC repairperson.
When your attic isn’t properly insulated (materials have shifted, loose fiberglass fill has settled, etc.) then the temperature inside of it will rise as the sun continues to rise and remain out over the course of the day. This also means your home is no longer negative pressure and causes the conditioned air from your home to rush into the attic instead. Thus, causing your HVAC to work harder to pump cold into your home and keep the temperature down. (Check out our previous post about the Stack Effect)
Attic Encapsulation is a great way to solve this issue. Once encapsulated, HVAC units begin blowing around 10 degrees cooler! This also allows the air in your ducts to remain closer to room temperature than heating up to ~140 degrees.
Instead of, “Close the door, so you don’t condition the whole neighborhood!” maybe we should all say, “Insulate your home, so you don’t condition the air in your attic!”
