At Epic Spray Foam, our success stems directly from our excellent customer service. We pride ourselves on going above and beyond to put each customer’s satisfaction first. We do that by taking the time to understand each homeowner’s specific needs and goals, delivering personalized insulation solutions that are just right for them. And it was no different when it came to our customer Shea B. in Canton, GA. Shea has a 3,400 square-foot single family home built in 2018.

After experiencing the benefits of spray foam in his basement refinish project, Shea came back to us to encapsulate his attic. The blown-in insulation that was installed when the house was built was already starting to wear out, and on the hottest Georgia days, the attic was reaching sizzling temperatures of 138 degrees. The home’s HVAC unit is also located in the attic, and even though it was working overtime, it just couldn’t keep up with the demand.

The Stack Effect

Shea’s issue is not uncommon here in Georgia. By 10 a.m. on summer days, the temperatures in residential attics with inadequate insulation start to skyrocket, leading to an imbalance in air circulation. Insufficient fresh air intake through the soffits is often the problem. Over time, debris can clog soffit vents, reducing their effectiveness. Even in brand-new homes, soffits are frequently not sized or balanced correctly to ensure proper airflow.

This imbalance creates negative pressure throughout the home, causing the cool, conditioned air inside to escape, while hot, humid outdoor air seeps in through windows, doors, and other gaps. This means higher indoor humidity levels and an overworked HVAC system, and lots of sky-high energy bills to prove it! This phenomenon is known as the Stack Effect.

A 5-Star Upgrade

By encapsulating Shea’s attic with spray foam, we were essentially able to put a protective “lid” on his home, halting the Stack Effect. Not only did this regulate the temperature in the house, but it also provided a shield against excessive moisture, allergens, and property-damaging pests. Spray foam has an impressively high R-value, or ability to resist heat and block outside air and elements.

Here’s what Shea had to say about the whole experience in his Google Review:

From first contact through installation, Justin and his team were quick to respond and professional. Justin’s team insulated my basement in the summer of 2023. The finished product was so great I had them back out in May to insulate my attic. In a day’s time the crew removed my blown-in insulation and sprayed my entire roof line. Now my upstairs cooling system works much easier to keep the second floor cool. My attic was only 80 degrees when outside temps neared 100 degrees this week. Fantastic job, Epic Spray Foam!

Is Spray Foam the Best Insulation Solution for Your Attic?

If you have uncomfortably hot rooms in your home half the year, attic encapsulation could be the upgrade that makes your entire home more quiet, clean, and comfortable. By using top-quality spray foam insulation, you reduce air loss, improve energy efficiency, and elevate your home’s indoor air quality, creating a more comfortable living environment year-round.

A Spray Foam Insulation Tax Credit is also in effect. U.S. residential homeowners can claim 30% of product costs, with a maximum credit amount of $1,200. This credit can be combined with other energy efficiency credits, for a total max credit of $3,200 per year. When you combine this with the many other benefits of spray foam insulation, the decision to encapsulate your attic with spray foam, and put a stop to the Stack Effect in your home once and for all, is a no-brainer!
